Idea has announced that it will also be launching Idea 4G Phone, a slightly expensive 4G handset to compete with Jio’s feature phone.
Himanshu Kapaniya, the managing director of Idea Cellular Limited. pointed out about how the proposed Jio Phones, which does not have any features like a smartphone will appeal those who want to browse the internet.
He said, ‘While clearly it has an appeal for customers with voice usage, what appeal does it have for customers who have an Internet requirement, we will have to wait to see’
Further flagging Net Neutrality, he said, ‘One of the concerns is about net neutrality. It will not allow most of the apps which a customer prefers and the choice of apps may not work because it is forcing consumers to use an individual operator’s apps.’
As, JioPhone will only work with Jio’s sim cards, and all the Jio Apps run only on Jio’s network.
According to him, the Aditya Birla Group company, which is being merged with larger rival Vodafone, is working with handset makers to launch a phone that will be slightly expensive, but offer customers the freedom of choice.
He also stated that, net neutrality is very touchy subject for all telecom companies world wide, and there was lot of controversy about it in the country last year.
